If you have ever wondered how a concrete coating goes from a rough, tired slab to a smooth, durable, showroom style finish, you are not alone. One of the most common questions we hear across Fargo and the surrounding communities is simple. What does the installation process actually look like. The answer is that a great coating comes down to expert preparation and precise application. At Epic Concrete Coatings, our trained team follows a proven six step system that delivers strong and long lasting results in just one day for most projects.
Below is a closer look at how it all works and why our North Dakota crew takes each step so seriously.
Preparation. The First and Most Important Step
Every floor is different. Concrete hardness, moisture levels, and structural condition all decide how we prepare the slab. During your free consultation we test the moisture and examine the surface to see if any repairs are needed.
Our crew then uses mechanical grinding to open the concrete. This creates the ideal profile for long term adhesion. Large propane grinders paired with diamond wheels handle the main surface and hand grinders reach the tight spots. All equipment is vacuum connected with HEPA filtration to keep airborne dust low.
Concrete Reconstruction. Fixing Cracks, Pits, and Spalling
Midwest weather is tough on concrete. Cracks, pits, and spalling are common issues in this region. We repair them with a polyurea mender that bonds beautifully with the concrete.
Cracks are opened with a v blade grinder to increase surface area, then filled and ground smooth once cured. Pits and spalled areas are also opened, cleaned, filled, and leveled. Each repair cures in minutes, allowing us to move quickly while still delivering a smooth and even surface.
Basecoat Application
For most projects, especially garages, we install a pure polyurea basecoat. We begin by coating any vertical surfaces such as curbing or stairs. Then we mix and apply the basecoat in one gallon batches, spreading it evenly at roughly 285 square feet per gallon. This gives the floor a strong foundation for the next steps.
Full Chip Broadcasting
The color chip blend you select is mixed thoroughly to keep the colors uniform. We broadcast the chips by hand until the entire surface is completely covered. This creates even color, texture, and added slip resistance.
Scraping the Chip for a Smooth, Even Texture
Once the basecoat cures, we scrape all loose or standing chips using metal blade scrapers. We scrape front to back and side to side for a consistent finish. Vertical edges are scraped by hand. Afterward we vacuum everything to remove any loose material.
Clear Coat for UV Stability and Long Term Protection
The final step is applying our polyaspartic clear coat. This topcoat is UV stable, nonporous, and resistant to chemicals, salt, gas, oil, grease, and moisture. It is mixed in small batches, carefully cut in around the edges, then spread and backrolled for a smooth and uniform finish. Once cured, the floor is ready for light foot traffic and full use shortly after.
